thursday things

xnxiKtr

When I logged in this morning I noticed an unusual amount of traffic from Reddit. When I followed the trail to the source I discovered this picture… featuring a League of Legends character running across my biscotti. And it made my mother-freaking day. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting into LoL lately and it might have just given me the push I need to start…

Other things that made my day this week include this tiny human who for some god-forsaken reason decided to turn Oreos into mascara… WHY ON EARTH you would waste PERFECTLY GOOD Oreos to make cosmetics is beyond me… Unless you wanted an excuse to to eat your eyelashes….

After the cronut and the cragel our slutty friend, the croissant, is at it again by now breeding with a cookie to create the “crookie”… WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END!?

cheetos-sweetos

Cheetos has created a sweet cinnamon snack, aptly named “Sweetos” which I can only assume is essentially a bag of cinna-twists (in untwisted form). I’m so down.

Although I’ve mentioned it with basil before, we finally have a definitive list of foods that will magically regrow themselves.

Scientists have found a way to let our astronauts enjoy espresso in space. Next up, maybe we will cure world hunger… but at least we found a way to fix space caffeine-withdrawal in the mean time.

The Super Bowl is taking place in my general vicinity this year, but I would be much more excited to score tickets to the Puppy Bowl. And by “score tickets” I really mean just roll around in the pile of Puppy Bowl pups.

And I could give you a super bowl round up but first I want to let you see this video of Will Ferrell blasting this cheerleader in the face with a basketball. I could watch this freaking loop ALL. DAY. LONG.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  I can’t believe it’s already 2015 ~ 2014 was quite a year, so 2015 has a lot to live up to.

We already discussed YOUR favorite recipes of 2014 – now I want to share MY favorite recipes from 2014… in no particular order. Not because I didn’t try to rank them, I did. I just could not for the life of me figure out which order to put them in because I loved them all SO MUCH.

If you didn’t get around to making any of these in 2014, I definitely recommend putting them on your to-do list for this year!

The savories…

This red lentil daal – it’s so warm and hearty and perfect for cold winter nights.

My pain au Thanksgiving – which could really be stuffed with anything – but were SO GOOD that we basically ended up consuming an entire batch of croissants in less than week…

These grain-free stuffed peppers from when I was on my whole 30 kick – I’ve been making them consistently ever since!

This over the top lasagna grilled cheese – because if you haven’t eaten your pasta inside of bread, then you haven’t truly lived.

If just looking at that grilled cheese is making your arteries clog, try this Creamless Creamy Cauliflower Soup – it is to DIE for.

 The sweets….

Pumpkin Cookies & Cream Ice Cream – which was an extremely difficult choice. Runners up included the salted caramel pumpkin roll and pumpkin pie bread pudding, but I didn’t want to pumpkin-out the list…

I have returned from my holiday slumber!

Didn’t mean to disappear on you guys but something wonderful happened over the holidays…. I … unplugged. I closed the laptop, stepped away from the computer, and spent time with our family. And it was glorious.

But now I’m back to give you a proper send-off. 2014 was a big deal around here, namely because Mr. Eats and I got hitched. On the blog side, I didn’t post as much as I would have liked (which is evident by 2013 posts dominating the “best of” list for 2014 🙂 – oops!) and probably didn’t fulfill any of my 2014 blog resolutions, but that’s what 2015 is for – right?

I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings ~ and to share it with all of you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

thursday things – the 2014 thanksgiving special!

1290198334976_9077383

Take a walk down memory lane with 20 years of Thanksgiving food trends.

Did you know that you could celebrate a fast food Thanksgiving (think “semi-homemade” – Sandra would be proud)… sadly that stuffing actually sounds really freaking good.

Meanwhile Food52 comes to the aid of your gluten-free guests.

King Arthur Flour answers the age-old question about what makes the best pie crust: Butter or Shortening? (Hint: IT’S BUTTER!)

New York Times has Thanksgiving across the states – what is your states dish? Arizona’s is apparently cranberry sauce with chiles.

And The Kitchn showed us how to make our entire Thanksgiving meal in the slow cooker. Of course, then you would need like six slow cookers, but who’s counting?

This Philly delicatessen has turkey-shaped mozzarella.

2014_pastificio12.0.0

And Salt & Straw has released a turkey flavored ice cream… that supposedly is actually pretty good.

Make your life easier on Turkey Day and cut down on those tears by nuking those onions before you chop them.

And DON’T BASTE THAT TURKEY because if Alton Brown doesn’t do it then neither should you.

If you still need to stock up on Thanksgiving gear, check out last year’s Thanksgiving Survival Kit with all the gear you need to get you through the holiday unscathed.

If you are heading out to the grocery store, Serious Eats will hook you up with a a printable list of your Thanksgiving pantry essentials.

Thanksgiving Recipe Roundup

The turkey is sacred territory to pretty much everyone out there, so I won’t touch that one with a ten foot pole. I will, however, give you some side dish ideas! This year hubby’s dad is making the turkey, so side dishes are all we need to worry about anyway!

Last year I made this sweet potato casserole recipe from Some Kitchen Stories and it was delicious.

This classic sage and sausage stuffing from Serious Eats is sure to please your Turkey Day guests.

Though Thanksgiving isn’t generally a time for experiments, I’d definitely give these slow cooker mashed potatoes from Gimme Some Oven a whirl

Of course it’s always good to have a nice, light salad on hand, but you don’t want it to be boring. That’s where A Periodic Table’s Asian Pear & Fennel Salad comes into play.

And let’s diverge from that murky green bean casserole and enjoy some of Pink Parsley’s crispy green bean fries instead.

I’m obligated to make this praline pumpkin cake every year or else Mr. Eats will kill me… in fact it may have been in the fine print of our marriage contract. “Must make pumpkin cake at least once a year”..  If you want to go the more traditional route, try the creamiest pumpkin pie in the world.

And don’t forget to make miniature versions of everything to serve to your hamster.
